Hitch Bike Rack Clearance Guide for Spare Tires

 When shopping for a hitch mounted bike rack to use on a vehicle with a rear mounted spare tire, one must measure the vehicle before buying the rack. Fit lists cannot help you make that choice because there are too many variables such as the placement of the hitch, the size of the tire, etc.
- Tie a weight to a string and tape the string to the back of the spare tire. Make sure the string hangs below the hitch.
- Measure the horizontal distance from the center of the hitch pin to the string.
- Choose a rack that has about an inch more in clearance.
- Put some padding on the hitch or spare tire to prevent scuffing due to bouncing during transport.
